Norman G. Jensen, Inc., launches xfServerPlus-based customs tracking Web site
One of the nation’s largest customs brokers, Norman G. Jensen (NGJ) uses a Synergy/DE-based system to handle all of their U.S. Customs transactions. Recently, they wanted a way to expose the customer data housed on their in-house OpenVMS system to their Web application so customers could track the status of their customs entries online.

NGJ decided to accomplish their objectives using Synergy/DE xfServerPlus and xfNetLink .NET Edition. To assist them in the process, they called upon the Synergex Professional Services Group (PSG) and Synergy/DE Passport to the Web. A PSG consultant worked onsite with NGJ’s development team, and within a week they had a live and fully functioning Web application.

“We banged through the whole process very quickly,” states NGJ’s IS director Michael Hanson. “Not only did we get the Web front-end up and running, we also had time to work on integrating XML and Web services into our solution.” NGJ plans to use the newly Web-enabled application as a prototype for their other applications that they want to bring to the Web. They also plan to start consuming Web services, beginning with the integration of their fax system. This integration will enable them to send faxes directly from their application.

NGJ is very pleased with their new Web solution, which makes them much more competitive in the customs broker marketplace. “We compete with big name companies like UPS and FedEx,” explains Hanson. “It’s imperative that we offer our customers the same services they can find elsewhere.”

The new xfServerPlus solution also offers significant time savings. NGJ’s previous solution required them to create text files from their OpenVMS system and upload them into another database system dedicated to their Web applications. With xfServerPlus, they are now able to expose all of the data to their Web application in real time without the burden of additional programming to create the transfer files and the additional processes and resources required to transfer and load the data. “xfServerPlus is a great product,” states Hanson. “The implementation took minimal effort, and we are really happy with the end result.”

“I would recommend Passport to the Web to any Synergy/DE customer who is looking to Web-enable their application,” concludes Hanson. “You get to work in your own environment and tailor the education to your own specific requirements. Within a week we had a solution that exceeded our original expectations.”
